With the advent of the internet, high-speed computers, voice recognition, mobile technology, etc. healthcare professionals today have many more tools at their disposal. But, technology is advancing faster than healthcare professionals can assimilate it into practice. Therefore, there is a new need for education and translation of emerging technologies and the data/information they generate into healthcare.

The first chapter discusses the background knowledge of health informatics and explains why it is one of the information sciences. You will learn basic informatics definitions, the history of the field, the key players involved with health information technology (HIT), and why there is so much interest in this relatively new field.

The second chapter stresses and expands upon the importance of healthcare data and information and the third chapter deals with data analytics. The Department of Health and Human Services and its agencies often follow the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) recommendations and guidance, thus statements and monographs by the IOM are emphasized. To encourage a general understanding of the federal government’s strategy for promoting the adoption of HIT, the chapter addresses the Office of the National Coordinator for HIT, its subcommittees, and its multiple initiatives

For this discussion: Define and discuss interoperability and one data standard from one category in Chapter 5.  Then, using news.google.com, to find and summarize a recent news article (within the last 60 days) related to one of the data standards listed in Chapter 5 of the textbook.  Be sure to include the name of the data standard and include a reference in APA format. Your original post is due on Wednesday and your comments are due on Sunday.  Please see the rubric for grading. 1. Chapter 5 lists many different data standards.
    • In your own words, define and discuss interoperability. Why is it important? How does interoperability relate to data standards?
    • Find and summarize a data standard from the textbook.  DO NOT USE A CATEGORY. FIND AN EXAMPLE FROM ONE OF THE CATEGORIES.
    • Then, find and summarize a recent news article related to the particular data standard you discussed in the previous question.
