Victims should not be blamed for their victimization. The clothes they wear or the location they find themselves near should not make them responsible for what happens to them. When someone is going against another’s wishes, they should be held accountable; not the victim. The Mike Tyson case happened before my time, so this is new to me. Desiree Washington, a young Miss Black America beauty pageant contestant, was raped by Tyson in a hotel room at two o’clock in the morning (Berkow, 1992). Washington’s story had no holes and was said to appear “credible” (Berkow, 1992). I agree with the prosecuting attorney’s argument suggesting that the victim is blameless. A woman following a man into a hotel room does not automatically mean that she is willing to have sex. Tyson was a huge figure in the community but appeared to turn violent in the case of Washington. There were some that tried to discredit Washington by stating she is a “gold-digger” (Berkow, 1992) but even if she acted like that in the past, it does not constitute rape. Where Washington gave a good statement, Tyson was caught lying on several occasions (Corliss, 2001). It did not help Tyson’s case when several parties offered her money to drop the case (Berkow, 1992). Victims should be respected in cases such as this because they are being brave in the face of accusations.
