1. Instructions: The first phase of the assignment requires that you decide on a behaviour that you would like to change and record the frequency of the behaviour itself and the circumstances around its occurrence.
  2.
  3. In this phase you are not trying to change the behaviour, you are simply OBSERVING it – systematically. You are collecting information to help design a good plan and to provide a basis of comparison for later on when you try to change your behaviour. For now, all you have to do is:
  4. 1. Choose a behaviour that you would like to increase or decrease. Ensure that the identified behaviour is clearly defined, overtly observable, and something you can clearly measure. Make sure it is a behaviour, not a feeling or emotion.
  5. Examples of target behaviours for the project include, but are not limited to, the following:
  6. • decreasing coffee/pop/energy drink consumption
  7. • increasing practice time
  8. • decreasing nail biting
  9. • increasing studying
  10. • decreasing time spent on devices/gaming
  11. • improving sleep scheduleIf you would like to do a different behaviour that\’s totally fine, but please check with me first!
  12.
  13. 2. Observe yourself and your natural target behaviour carefully and systematically for five days, just behaving as you always do. Make note of the following:
  14. • Are there certain experiences or situations that encourage you to show the desired behaviour, or conditions that make it difficult?
  15. • Are there certain circumstances when you seem to increase an undesirable behaviour, or other conditions where you are less tempted to do it?
  16. • Pay attention to and record the antecedents that precede the target behaviour: What kinds of things, events, or feelings trigger the behaviour?• What happens after you do the behavior?
  17. How do you feel? Are there good outcomes of an undesirable behaviour that keep you doing it?
  18. Are there unpleasant outcomes of the target/desirable behaviour that prevent you from doing it?Be sure to have noted as much information about the circumstances surrounding the behaviour as you might need later in the project. Careful observation of details will be important and useful.
  19. As important, however, will be a specific count of the number of times you exhibited that behavior.
  20.
  21. 3. Provide a chart or table with an exact tally of how many times you engaged in the behaviour each day and your observations about what happens before and after you do the behaviour.
  22.
  23. Submit your 5 days of observations by clicking on the assignment title (\”Part 1: OBSERVE behaviour\”), and attaching your file as LastNameOBSERVE.doc (or .docx or .pdf – please no .pages!).
  24. The assignment should include a written description of your target behaviour, your observations about triggers and outcomes, and a table or chart with the daily tally.
